Creative Reuse Centers

Creative Reuse Centers

Ever since I first heard the term “Creative Reuse Centers”, I knew they would play an important role in my upcycling life. A craft thrift store sounded like heaven on Earth- and nowadays, ever creator I know is a fan. So, I wanted to create a resource on my website that would help other creators locate these stores across the USA.

What Are Creative Reuse Centers?

First and foremost, a creative reuse center is a thrift store for any sort of arts and crafts supplies. These stores are often part of a nonprofit organization that is connected to the art community in any given city or town. Creative Reuse Centers are not only stores, but often include studio space for makers and offer classes and workshops. Some of these events may be geared towards children, but many of them are all-ages or adults-only affairs.

What Supplies Do They Sell?

Creative Reuse Centers are repositories for just about anything that can be used to create an art or craft project. Yarn, fabric, beads, paint, stamps, stickers, and craft paper are some of the typical supplies found at these craft thrift stores.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their offerings. These centers also collect unwanted supplies from other local businesses that have excess supply. Leather scraps from upholsterers, bottle caps from breweries, and tile pieces from flooring stores are just a few examples. Each creative reuse center’s inventory is fluid and changes based on the donations received.

Some of these stores also sell general secondhand goods alongside the DIY supplies. Vintage decor, jewelry, and other curiosities may also be found at certain Creative Reuse Centers.

As stores like Joann Fabric close, Creative Reuse Centers will become more and more important. Because while they’re inventory may fluctuate, they may still be a viable option for locating inexpensive fabric, notions, and other craft supplies.

Which Creative Reuse Spots are Missing?

While I tried to assemble as comprehensive a list as possible, I’m sure that I’ve missed some wonderful Creative Reuse Centers here. Please let me know via email ([email protected]) or via this contact form if you have information that should be included. And thank you in advance for any assistance or suggestions!

At the other end of the spectrum, if you are aware of a creative reuse center that has closed, please also feel free to share that with me, too. My hope is to maintain this list as up-to-date as possible.
